Hiscock Park

Of all the monuments to his legacy that Mayor Menino has erected in this town, HISCOCK PARK is one of our favorites. Nestled deep in Boston’s South End, Hiscock may be tiny (it’s not Menino’s long-yearned-for 1000-foot tower, that’s for sure), but it’s one of the neighborhood’s crown jewels. An oasis of stately seclusion, Hiscock sees little action. It’s hardly neglected, though, thanks to a devoted group of groundskeepers — the Friends of Hiscock — who make sure it’s impeccably manicured. So bring a lunch. And a pet. According to its signage, Hiscock “welcomes all neighbors and four-footed friends.”

1. Hiscock Park is on WEST Newton St, not East Newton St.
2. The vacant lot which resulted from the fire that destroyed two rooming houses in 1952, was transformed into a park via the labors and monetary contributions of the West Newton St. residents in the mid-1970's, without City funds and long before Mayor Menino took office.
3. In the past decade, the City revamped the park into its current design.
4. As a piece of trivia: The park got its name from the man, homeless by choice, who loved the neighborhood, and who died on West Newton St. during the neighborhood efforts to build the park. At that time, when none of the residents could afford more than a couple of hundred dollars toward the park, the homeless Mr. Hiscock left all his assets ($5,000) to be used to purchase plants and fencing for the park.
