Best Place To See Phineas Gage's Skull

Warren Anatomical Museum

Like your gothic horror swaddled in science? Head to Harvard Medical School’s WARREN ANATOMICAL MUSEUM, New England’s ne plus ultra of gobsmacking forensic weirdness. Among the macabre delights here — strange kidney stones, Civil War bone saws, the first ether mask — the most prized is the skull of Phineas Gage. In 1848, Gage survived a railroad accident that shot an iron rod through his brain, making him history’s most famous frontal-lobe-lesion case study. See this neuropsych rock star’s skull (hole and all) for yourself on display in this small-but-solid collection.
