Newbury Comics
If you hadn’t noticed, Bostonians — even those only here for four years of college — tend be fiercely loyal to certain things. For example, the Red Sox, the Celtics, St. Patrick’s Day (oh, sorry — Evacuation Day) as an excuse for a day-long beerfest, and parking spots in Southie (that cone means, “Don’t even think about it”). NEWBURY COMICS, which first opened on Newbury Street in 1978, falls into that category. Perhaps our readers vote for it year after year because they have fond memories of pawing through CD/tape/record bins during their formative music-listening years at one of 20-some New England locations now open. Maybe it’s because they also sell DVDs, an impressive array of comics and graphic novels, and a smattering of miscellany: bobble-head dolls, wallets, posters, and magazines. Either way, it’s a staple of the Boston canon — one we hope won’t disappear with the digital age anytime soon.
