World’s End

Like the condo developers of more recent times who saw dollar signs in every Boston fixer-upper, 19th-century farm owner John Brewer had a vision for WORLD'S END, the picturesque coastal peninsula on his South Shore property: 163 house plots, connected by scenic, looping roads, all designed with the help of Frederick Law Olmsted. Brewer's 1889 subdivision never came to fruition, however, and thanks to the Trustees of Reservations, the land is ours to enjoy for year-round hiking, biking, and snowshoeing. The paths are still there, winding grandly around the four lush drumlins and offering spectacular views of Hingham Harbor and the Boston skyline. Although the occasional motorboat, mountain biker, or wind turbine might break the perfect sightlines, it's not hard to imagine the area as Brewer saw it when he walked his grounds 120 years ago.
