Best Attempt At Making Boston Bike-Friendly

New Bike Lanes

Boston, as Bicycling Magazine loves reminding us with its yearly best/worst lists, is not the bike-friendliest of cities (we've made the worst list three times). Every day, cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers prepare for battle while commingling on the city's narrow, meandering streets. There's been debate within the biking community as to whether bike lanes improve or worsen the situation. The drawback is that they create a false sense of security, and place bikers directly in the path of suddenly opening car doors. Still, the upside is that the five miles of NEW BIKE LANES unveiled by Nicole Freedman, Boston's "bike czar," may make drivers more aware of their motorless peers, and more apt to "share the road," as they are encouraged to do by signs all over Beacon Street, Comm Ave, and elsewhere in Greater Boston. Here's to keeping it wheel.
