Phoenix readers, we commend you. You went against the grain and didn’t vote for the incumbent based on name recognition alone. Instead, a write-in candidate did the near-impossible and swept the category, claiming its place at the top of the sandwich hit list. The REAL DEAL DELI is exactly that: a four-year-old West Roxbury eatery specializing in hearty and humorously named sandwiches. Sure, they have stellar versions of the classic chicken-Caesar wrap and a buffalo-chicken version topped with bleu cheese. But here, the kitschy “gangster wrap” names make them sound more like members of the Sopranos (the Joe Spa and the Teflon Don, respectively) than two-hands-necessary lunch grub. The paninis are perfectly pressed on the deli’s flat focaccia, and at just over $6 each, they’re hearty bargains. For real.
