Best Down-And-Dirty Indian

Guru the Caterer

Boston brims with Indian restaurants. Some are luscious, others are overrated, almost all resemble swank hookah dens. When you don't need a $12 martini to accompany your vindaloo, make haste to GURU THE CATERER. This cheery storefront on the edge of Somerville's Teele Square specializes in take-out curries on the cheap. Indecisive diners, rejoice: you can't order every permutation of paneer here. Instead, the menu rotates daily; customers choose from a fixed vegetarian and non-vegetarian platter, both of which include rice and naan. The portions are large — even the healthiest appetite will have trouble polishing off a platter in one sitting. The price is reasonable, hovering at $7. And, best of all, service is downright jovial. Guru is family-run. The owner's young daughter can often be seen prancing through the restaurant, chatting up waiting customers. Can't hoof it to Somerville? They also run a thriving delivery service.
