Off the Couch: Psychoanalysis Goes to the Movies
As Sigmund Freud’s theories lose credibility as a form of therapy, they grow in influence as a tool for interpreting films. Hence the value of the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s OFF THE COUCH: PSYCHOANALYSIS GOES TO THE MOVIES film series, in which a psychologically provocative film is followed by an in-depth Freudian (Jungian and Lacanian approaches are optional) discussion of the work, conducted under the auspices of a genuine trained professional. (Note: this is strictly talk therapy; no medications will be administered). Films have included this year’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, The Counterfeiters, in which the issue of survivor guilt and the inescapability of moral relativism played a significant part in the dialogue, and David Gordon Green’s Snow Angels, in which survivor guilt and moral relativism also look like they might have been hot topics. At any rate, it beats paying $140 an hour to talk about your own problems.
