CRANE BEACH

Situated on the sandy coast of the North Shore town of Ipswich, CRANE BEACH is one of the best reasons why you need to either own a car in Boston or know someone who does. Once you get through the parking lot and over the marshy, reedy dunes that meet your line of sight, you make it down to your own little Nice, France — or something like that. The water is cold, but even on a hot day you can find a great spot to enjoy the blue-gray horizon and the sandy spits at low tide. And when you're hot and enervated from a day of beach reading, wading in the sandy bottom water or playing Frisbee with futility in the wind, stop off at Russell Orchards down the road for some ice cream.
