Now that they have gone from worst to first in the NBA, everybody watches the Celtics. But if you just tune in on TV you’re missing one of the best shows in town. When the ref’s whistle blows or a period ends, all you get on the tube is colorful commentary from Tommy Heinsohn and Mike Gorman or a Bob’s Discount Furniture commercial. If you’re watching from one of the comfortable seats in the TD BANKNORTH GARDEN, though, you get a three-ring circus; a frantic routine from the pre-teen ensemble Li’L Funk, equaling in energy, moves, and synchronization the grown-up Celtics Dancers; an appearance from the winner of Heroes Among Us — at a recent game it was a woman who trained monkeys to aid the disabled; a curtain call from Lucky, the Celtics leprechaun mascot, doing a somersault-slam-dunk off a trampoline; an exuberant and highly unskilled contest between two local kids-basketball teams. And, of course, you get the JumboTron, which at any minute could feature Godzilla leading a chant of “De-fense!”, the ’70s-era icon Gino showing off moves in the dance that bears his name, Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling acknowledging a standing ovation, or, best of all, yourself. And, unlike at Fenway Park or Gillette Stadium, the odds are still pretty good your own face will end up there with those of all your heroes.
