3. Siouxsie and the Banshees | "Spellbound"

Like other bands who were inspired by the Sex Pistols and almost immediately became a thousand times better than the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie & the Banshees had utterly outgrown punk by the early ’80s. Their ’81 magnum opus Juju opens with this impelling entrancer, marked by a snapping acoustic guitar lick and Miss Sioux’s iconic cantillations. Though a big influencer on indie, goth, and punk, the echo of Siouxsie & the Banshees’ resonates far beyond obvious cultural corners. The “Spellbound” video, wherein Susan and Co. run around in the woods for ambiguous reasons, became the template for every black-metal video ever. Also, when James O’Barr designed Eric Draven for The Crow, he clearly envisioned a male version of Siouxsie Sioux on steroids.
