52. Rasputina | "The New Zero"
"The New Zero" by Rasputina from the album How We Quit the Forest (1998)
The Victorian Era was merely OG goths in brighter colors, so it’s fitting New York’s Rasputina crashes the list with 1998’s chilly sleepover date, “The New Zero.” Guest drumming by producer Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails) gave the cello trio an urgency generally lacking in Melora Creager’s songwriting, but her yearning and apprehension in being taken to the Ice Hotel floats over this bustling symphony like a butterfly in black lace.
