98. Catatonia | Mulder and Scully
"Mulder and Scully" by Catatonia from the album International Velvet (1998)
There's a fine line between Britpop's sweet tooth for a catchy song with a wink-'n'-nudge sense of ironic detachment, and a plain ol' case of '90s novelty-song-itis. Catatonia rocks it out way harder than was their style, almost like each distorto-chord was going to cover up the Barenaked Ladies-level dork factor - but vocalist Cerys Matthews isn't having it, taunting us, in her deep and shockingly husky Welsh brogue. Wasn't Cool Britannia supposed to be "cool"?
