The first three Call of Duty games took place during WWII, but Modern Warfare trail-blazed the franchise’s path into the future. The game takes place in 2011 and describes a third World War involving Russia and the Middle East. The developers spoke with US Marines to inspire their story’s dialogue and introduced several new weapons and technologies to the series. The success of this game clearly inspired the next two wildly popular modern CoD games: Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops.
