How did humble Bubble Bobble float its way to the top? The gameplay isn’t revolutionary, and it’s just about dragons who blow bubbles and hunt monsters and collect fruit, none of which are things dragons really do. Well, for starters, it’s just as infuriating, addictive, and adorable as it was 24 years ago. But the true power of Bubble Bobble is the music — that never-ending carousel loop of 8-bit whimsy luring you downward, further into the cave of monsters. Also, when you beat the arcade game in hard mode, the final boss — “Super Drunk” — turns out to be your enslaved human parents. This is completely true. _Dave Barker
