When it comes to training gamers in combat skills, the Wii and all its interactive doodads (read: opportunities to chuck your make-believe katana through your TV) may reign supreme these days. But even on the humble NES, Tecmo's 1991 release Ninja Gaiden taught us a lot about being an actual ninja . . . because it required you to develop infinite fucking patience and reflexes like a jackrabbit on muscle stims. If you did manage to successfully wall-flip and shuriken your way through wave after wave of crazed birds and Jason Voorhees look-alikes, you were handsomely rewarded with some of the best cut scenes ever to grace an 8-bit cartridge. _Shaula Clark
