Blaster-to-blaster combat with the twisted creations of Dr. Wily was what really separated the poseurs from the hardcore kids. Not to disparage Mario, but practically everybody beat Super Mario Bros. Mega Man games, by contrast, were fucking hard. Demystifying necessities, like assimilating Metal Man’s Metal-Blade attack into your arsenal before chancing a showdown with Wood Man, took some forethought. Some levels all but required memorization for passage. Life was tough when you were an adorable good cyborg built to destroy adorable evil cyborgs. _Barry Thompson
