3.The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Link to the Past is the third game in the Zelda series, and it’s still considered the zenith of the franchise, as well as the best Shigeru Miyamoto game ever to grace the SNES. Although future Zelda titles would use innovations like 3-D graphics (Ocarina of Time) or motion-control swordplay (Twilight Princess), this 1992 classic set a high bar for the franchise and redefined the adventure genre as a whole. The story begins when Link learns that he is destined to save Princess Zelda and the fate of two worlds from an evil sorcerer . . . so it’s not the most original story, and the series goes on to recycle that plot ad nauseum. The Zelda franchise succeeds, however, because of remarkable gameplay and design. While spelunking through dungeons in the Light World and the Dark World — and occasionally transforming into an adorable pink bunny — Link defeats his enemies and solves puzzles using an unusually high variety of iconic weapons, such as the hook-shot and the boomerang. Link to the Past was a technical marvel of its time that pushed the envelope of the SNES’s capabilities; the game was not seen as just another game for the SNES, but the reason to own one. _Haldan Smith
