A genre-defining precursor to the likes of Halo and Half-Life, Doom received some undue blame for guiding Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold toward batshit insanity. But if the Columbine killers really aspired to emulate Doom’s nameless protagonist, they would’ve waged two-man war against a hell-spawned army on Mars’s moon, Phobos. Let us never think of Doom and its trigger-happy brethren as advertisements for violence. These games teach youngsters the valuable lesson that mass murder is wrong, unless the victims are demons, aliens, or Nazis. Because demons, aliens, and Nazis don’t have moms. _Barry Thompson
