44.Kirby's Adventure

The cuteness fools no one — Kirby is a Lovecraftian horror. Behind that gummy, pink maw is an endless sucking void that grinds enemies’ bones into stardust, their souls fueling his unslakeable hat fetish. HAL Laboratory’s shape-shiftingest hero started life as a placeholder doodle and just never got retooled. Kirby debuted on the Game Boy, but the pastel riot Kirby’s Adventure (1993’s unofficial NES swan song) is where the future Smash brawler truly came into his own. KA introduced Kirby’s now-trademark “copy abilities,” which allow him to devour foes whole and take on their powers, be it fire, lightning, ice, or, um ... yarn. _Shaula Clark
