Maybe this speaks to my heathen upbringing, but firing up this 1994 game for the first time was as close as I've ever come to having a religious experience. Using Silicon Graphics technology, Brit developers Rare wrung every last morsel out of the 16-bit SNES cartridge, groundslamming its 32-bit competition with detail-drenched scenery — from that first jungle sunset to the dizzying sprawl of Tree Top Town. Despite the countless hours I spent worshiping at the Altar of the Necktie-Wearing Ape (right up to the final King K. Rool showdown), I never beat DKC — I just didn't want it to end. _Shaula Clark
