In the mid-'90s, we’d come to expect certain things out of games, like a strong protagonist who will swoop in and save the world just in the nick of time. Final Fantasy VI subverted those expectations. First, it gave depth to at least six characters, not just one. Terra, our identity character, is emotionally fragile and confused for most of the story. And the villain, Kefka, actually wins — even after you defeat him, the result is still a world facing an uncertain future. _Ryan Stewart
