Macho 1980s action movies met their match in Contra, surely the manliest game ever committed to silicon. Playing as one of two shirtless, muscled heroes — modeled after Arnold and Sly on the box cover, if not in the game itself — your duty was to storm the jungles of an unnamed South American country, blasting waves of alien foes with increasingly ludicrous weaponry. How badass was Contra? The final level took place within the body of the alien leader and ended when you destroyed his pulsating heart. That’ll put some hair on your chest — even if it takes 30 lives to do it. _Mitch Krpata
