Hideo Kojima’s baroque masterpiece refuses to be categorized. It’s an action game in which the best course of action is to hide from enemies. It’s got a rogues’ gallery whose comic-book exteriors mask inner lives of pain and despair. It’s a slam-bang war story whose convincing moral is that neither side wins a war. And it’s a video game that will happily devote 20 minutes to a cutscene that gives the player nothing to do. For so many reasons, Metal Gear Solid shouldn’t work, but Kojima’s singular vision makes it a sprawling work of genius. There’s nothing else like it.
