With its gelling action, puzzles, dazzling 3-D landscape, and bullshit about elves and monsters scrapping over arcane artifacts, this N64 upgrade of the Zelda series absorbed far too much of our time and attention back in ‘98. Like the equally mind-enslaving Lost, Ocarina played the time-travel card to explain why a preadolescent central character abruptly grew two feet taller. But the swashbucklin’, flamin’-arrow-flingin’ Link never let a convoluted narrative device slow down his quest to liberate the kingdom of Hyrule and rescue the princess lady from Ganondorf’s gnarly clutches. _Barry Thompson
