Fancy new multiplayer shooters seem to hit shelves every nanosecond, and yet Minh Le and Jess Cliffe’s 1999 minimalist mod of Half-Life remains a favorite for PC gamers over a decade later. Counter-Strike’s short, hectic rounds have all the urgency and delight of a childhood game of Capture the Flag, except it’s a bomb, not a flag, and there are head-shots instead of playful tackling. The game’s community does include hackers with no qualms about cheating, but if you’re willing to do some digging, there are honest servers to be found.
