One afternoon in late 2001, a luxury automobile cruised past me. Observing this, I thought, “Hmm, I should jack that car and joyride like a maniac until the cops kill me somewhere around the four-star mark.” That’s when I realized playing Grand Theft Auto III for 72 hours straight can make a man forget actions have consequences. But it wasn’t just gleefully nihilistic abandon that made GTA III so engrossing. Plenty of way more violent video games weren’t nearly as successful. The experience of roaming the rich, multi-layered landscape of Liberty City would’ve almost been worth the time commitment by itself. _Barry Thompson
