All-Time Best Band: The Four Seasons vs. the Misfits
All-Time Best Solo Artist: Bruce Springsteen
Best New Act: Nicole Atkins

Help us, dear readers. On the one hand, we love Newark’s Four Seasons, led by Frankie Valli, who were a musical maelstrom, producing more hit records in the ’60s than any other American band (they were, however, bested by the Beatles, Elvis, and Ray Charles). On the other hand, we also adore the Misfits, who pioneered horror punk, launched the career of Glenn Danzig, and spun off the genius-ly named Mary Tyler Whores. The former ruled doo-wop, while the latter subverted it. Valli’s fallback career was that of a barber, while the Misfits invented the devilock hairstyle. Coincidence? Never you mind. Just tell us which is the all-time Jersey band champ. Vote above! | Even though he sounds like an Oklahoma Dust Bowler, Bruce Springsteen is indeed from the broken-hero-highway-jammed Garden State. The high-energy Swampland songsmith is one of rock’s eternal showmen. (Incidentally, a last-chance power drive used to cost considerably less than $4.25 per gallon.) | If they (you know who they are) ever made a Broadway musical out of a David Lynch movie, the producers would be foolish not to turn the project over to Neptune’s Nicole Atkins. Her gorgeous marriage of haunting, deliberately dark dirges and throaty, theatrical Judy Garland–esque vocals situates her Jersey Shore hometown squarely in Lynch country.

Re: New Jersey
You could make the arguement that Bruce Springsteen is the greatest American Act in the Rock era. I think so.

Re: New Jersey
Indy Transplant you beat me to the punch!Boy, did you guys mess this one up!  Seriously, Downbeat's all-time leading Male Vocalist, the man who defined post-war hip, not to mention was a key player in braking down the color barrier, the man often as not simply known as THE VOICE?!Frank Sinatra is from Hoboken.  Hoboken is in NEW JERSEY!  Repeat.  Frank Sinatra is from Hoboken.  Hoboken is in NEW JERSEY! At the very least, you missed a controversy on the order of the Prince-Dylan battle in Minnesota.   Don't get me wrong: I love Bruce.  The Boss and The Chairman of the Board occupy equal pedistals in my book!  Perhaps you could have said the E-Street Band was Jersey's greatest, just as you said the Velvets were New York's.   Lou Reed's relationship to the Velvets is indentical to The Boss's with E-Street.Frankie Vallie was awesome in his cameo as 'Rusty' on the Sopranos (a Brooklyn 'associate' ironically), and Pauly's mother did stroke-out on the bus on the way home from 'Jersey Boys'.  However, every drunk college kid who has ever stepped up to the mike at Karaoke to belt out a hoarse 'Livin' on a Prayer!' is saying 'the Four what?'

Re: New Jersey
Bruce is the right answer.  Franky was a bad ass and his voice was amazing, but we're talking artist here.  Springsteen is on the Mount Rushmore of rock.  He easily takes this Hipster Poll of disticntion.

Re: New Jersey
I'm one more vote that says if you're talking greatest artist of ALL TIME you have to go with Sinatra.  I'd have gone with Bruce w/the E-Street Band as best band but until Bruce charts in 5 consecutive decades and gets play on rock, pop, jazz and blues stations, Ol' Blue Eyes tops him, and I think even Bruce would agree.

Re: New Jersey
What about Bon Jovi??Hello, album named NEW JERSEY!!!  Springsteen is a true symbol of NJ and Frankie Valli I believe still lives there. Tough choice on this one. I am from NJ so it is a tough call. What about miss burnout Whitney Houston?

Re: New Jersey
Ok, I'm not even going to mention Bon Jovi...but The Misfits and the Four Seasons??! Please. I've lived in NJ my whole life and I've seen some lousy bands come out of here, but one of the best in my lifetime has been The Smithereens. I can't believe that they were slighed in favor of The Misfits and the Four Seasons.
