ACADIA NATIONAL PARK

The park is on Mount Desert Island, right off the coast. Skiers can hear and sometimes see the ocean. Free camping in the park, and plenty of lodging nearby.
Number of trails: 45 miles of carriage paths, 35 of them groomed on a varying schedule, and 20 miles of unplowed park roads

The cross-country trail system at Black Mountain was designed by two-time Olympian Chummy Broomhall. Trails are groomed for both classic and skating techniques whenever possible.
Number of trails: 17 km of groomed trails, with snowmaking on 4 km

RANGELEY LAKES TRAILS CENTER
Address: Saddleback Mountain Road, Rangeley
Hours: ski anytime; lodge and rental shop open daily from 8 am to 4 pm
This trail system in western Maine offers beginner trails around Saddleback Lake and more challenging treks on lower Saddleback Mountain. Natural snowfall in the area averages over 200 inches.
Number of trails: 35 km of groomed trails
Rates: adults $12 weekdays, $17 weekends/holidays; children $8, $9
Rentals: $10 for skate skis, $8 for classic skis
Lodging: on the mountain, Rock Pond Mountain homes, and White Birch condominiums; other lodging in nearby Rangeley Village
SKI MOUNT ABRAM
Address: Rte 26, Greenwood (near Bethel)
Hours: 9 am-4 pm daily
Duane's Nordic Retreat at Mount Abram overlooks East Bethel, ponds, lakes, and the mountains of the Oxford Hills region.
Number of trails: 5 km cross-country loop
Rentals: no cross-country skis, but snowshoes are available for $15 adults, $10 juniors
Lodging: Bethel Inn & Country Club, Norseman Inn, and other Bethel hotels have package deals with the mountain, and there are a variety of other inns, B&Bs, and motels in the area
SUGARLOAF OUTDOOR CENTER
Address: Rte 27, Carrabassett Valley
Hours: Sun-Fri 9 am-5 pm, Sat 9 am-8 pm
In addition to skiing, there’s an Olympic-size skating rink, a barbecue, and a sun deck.
Number of trails: 100 km, all groomed and double-tracked. Skill level ranges from a 13-km beginner trail to an expert trail with a 750-foot vertical drop
Rates: trail fees $17 adults, $10 juniors/seniors. After 12:30 pm, adults $13, juniors/seniors $8
Rentals: adults $18, juniors $14. After 12:30 pm, adults $13, juniors $10
Instruction: group lessons $30/90 min, private lessons $50/hr
